Patna’s Golghar is 236 years old | The Golghar of Patna still remains a center of attraction for people today

The Golghar of Patna still remains a center of attraction for people today. Patna’s Golghar is 236 years old. It has 145 steps all around it, from where you can easily enjoy a panoramic view of the entire city.

Patna’s Golghar is not just famous in Bihar but across the country. If you visit Patna and don’t go to Golghar, your Bihar trip will remain incomplete. Golghar in Patna was constructed in 1786 by Captain John Garstin. He designed Golghar as a granary. Due to an engineering flaw, Golghar was never filled to its maximum capacity, as it was believed that if the granary was completely filled, the doors would not open. Golghar is one of the places in the city where people come to seek solitude away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

The architecture of Golghar, shaped like a stupa, is a major attraction for visitors. It has 145 steps on all sides that take you to the top, offering panoramic views of the entire city. Additionally, you can have picnics amid lush green gardens and parks nearby. Golghar also hosts a light and sound show for tourists. The construction of Golghar was not primarily for tourism but to save the people from a food crisis during the devastating famine of 1770, which resulted in the deaths of nearly one crore people in Bengal, Bihar, and modern-day Bangladesh. At that time, India’s then Governor-General, Warren Hastings, ordered the construction of this enormous structure to store grains for British troops. It was conceived and built by Captain John Garstin, with a storage capacity of 140,000 tons.
