Dhanteras 2025: Auspicious Timings for Shopping, Puja, and Significance of Kubera, Lakshmi, and Yam Deepak

Dhanteras, the festival that marks the beginning of the Diwali celebrations in India, is observed today. It is also known as Dhantrayodashi

. On this day, devotees worship Lord Kubera, the treasurer of wealth, and Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of prosperity and fortune. According to legend, Goddess Lakshmi emerged from the churning of the ocean on this day, bringing prosperity, along with Lord Kubera, the god of wealth. It is believed that whatever is purchased on Dhanteras brings good fortune throughout the year. Hence, people often buy gold, silver, and even vehicles on this day.

Dhanteras 2025 Date and Tithi:
According to the Drik Panchang, the Kartika month Krishna Paksha Trayodashi

tithi begins on October 18 at 12:18 PM and ends on October 19 at 1:51 PM.

Auspicious Shopping Timings on Dhanteras 2025:

  • First Muhurat: 8:50 AM to 10:33 AM
  • Second Muhurat: 11:43 AM to 12:28 PM
  • Third Muhurat: 7:16 PM to 8:20 PM

Choghadiya Muhurat for Shopping on Dhanteras:

  • Shubh Kaal: 7:49 AM to 9:15 AM
  • Laabh Unnati Muhurat: 1:32 PM to 2:57 PM
  • Amrit Kaal: 2:57 PM to 4:23 PM
  • Char Kaal: 12:06 PM to 1:32 PM

Puja Muhurat on Dhanteras:
The auspicious timing for the main puja starts at 7:16 PM and ends at 8:20 PM. During this time, devotees worship Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Kubera, and Lord Dhanvantari. The worship is believed to bring happiness and prosperity.

Yam Deepak Timing:
On Dhanteras evening, after sunset, a four-faced Yama Deepak is lit at the main entrance of the house, symbolically worshiping Lord Yama, the god of death. This ritual, known as Yam Deepak or Deepdan, is performed for the peace and well-being of the family. The muhurat for lighting the Yam Deepak is from 5:48 PM to 7:04 PM, lasting 1 hour and 16 minutes.

What Should Be Purchased on Dhanteras?
Astrologers advise that shopping on Dhanteras brings positivity and prosperity to the home. Common purchases include:

  • Gold and Silver: Buying gold and silver jewelry or coins is considered highly auspicious, inviting the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi.
  • Utensils: Copper and brass utensils bought on this day are believed to bring good luck.
  • New Brooms: Bringing home a new broom is thought to sweep away negative energies and bring in positivity.

Significance of Dhanteras:
Dhanteras is not only about purchasing wealth items but also commemorates the birth of Lord Dhanvantari, the god of Ayurveda. According to mythology, Lord Dhanvantari emerged carrying the pot of nectar (Amrit) during the churning of the ocean and is worshipped for health, longevity, and well-being. Along with Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kubera, devotees pray for financial prosperity and good health.

This day marks an important beginning to the five-day Diwali festivities, with rituals and shopping intended to invoke divine blessings for the year ahead.
