Central Government Approves Construction of a New Airport in Bihta, Patna
The central government has approved the construction of a new airport in Bihta, Patna, with an estimated cost of ₹459.99 crore. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has awarded the work order for this project to a Russian company.
The Bihta airport will be constructed under the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) mode. The technical bidding for this project took place on November 21 last year, while the financial bid was opened through the CPP portal on December 20.
Following this, AAI granted approval for the proposal. The construction of Bihta airport is expected to be completed by 2027.
Company Assigned to Bihta Airport Terminal Will Also Develop IT Systems
The company responsible for the Bihta Airport terminal will not only construct the terminal building but also set up the IT system.
The project includes the construction of a new integrated terminal building, a utility building, an elevated road, electro-mechanical works, IT systems, a security system, and comprehensive maintenance and operational work. Additionally, there are plans to extend the runway to 3,700 meters.
Construction Will Be Completed at Less Than 30% Cost
According to available information, the construction of Bihta Airport will be completed at a cost 30% lower than the estimated budget. The project’s estimated cost was ₹666.85 crore, but the bid under the tender process came 30.92% lower.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has directed experts to submit at least three design proposals within the next 10 days. After a technical evaluation, the final design expert will be selected.
Bihta Airport will have the capacity to handle 3,000 passengers simultaneously. The airport will also have 10 parking bays for aircraft, including A-321, B-700-800, and A-320 models.
Bihta Airport is part of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s vision. He recently conducted a site inspection of the proposed airport. To ensure smooth connectivity, an elevated corridor is also being constructed from Danapur Railway Station to Bihta Airport.
