The Bihar government has announced an ambitious infrastructure development roadmap for 2026, aimed at dramatically improving road connectivity across the state. The plan includes the construction of five new expressways, two high-speed greenfield corridors, thousands of kilometres of new roads, and numerous major bridge projects, signaling one of the largest investments in transport infrastructure in recent years.
The initiative was part of the state budget proposals presented for the fiscal year 2026-27, with infrastructure development emerging as a key priority. The government has earmarked significant resources for expanding and modernising Bihar’s transport network to reduce travel times, enhance regional connectivity, and support economic growth.
Among the flagship projects are five expressways designed to link major cities and economic hubs within Bihar and beyond. These expressways are expected to improve connectivity not just within the state but also with neighbouring regions, opening up faster routes for trade and travel.
In addition to the expressways, the plan includes the development of two high-speed corridors under the greenfield model, which involves creating new access-controlled roadways from scratch. These corridors will further facilitate efficient long-distance travel and are envisioned to enhance Bihar’s connectivity with adjacent states.
The extensive road plan also covers the construction of several major bridges and bypasses, aimed at easing traffic bottlenecks and linking remote regions with urban centres. Work on upgrading and expanding existing highways into six-lane and express road configurations is also expected to begin or accelerate in 2026, strengthening the overall transport grid.
Officials say this transformative infrastructure push is intended to shorten travel times, boost commerce, attract investment, and create employment opportunities throughout Bihar. The enhanced road network is expected to benefit sectors ranging from agriculture and industry to tourism, as well as improve everyday commuting for residents.
Overall, the 2026 road development agenda showcases Bihar’s growing focus on modernising its transport infrastructure to keep pace with rising economic and mobility demands. With major projects scheduled to begin or advance in the coming year, the state is poised for a significant upgrade in connectivity.
