The Bihar government is moving forward with an ambitious technology initiative by proposing the establishment of a Mega Artificial Intelligence (AI) Centre of Excellence at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Patna. The move is part of a broader strategy to strengthen the state’s capabilities in AI research and innovation, positioning Bihar as a future hub for advanced technology and knowledge-based development.
At a recent high-level meeting of the Bihar AI Mission, chaired by the state’s Chief Secretary, officials recommended setting up this state-of-the-art centre on the IIT Patna campus in Bihta. The proposed project is expected to cost around ₹60 crore, and would be built on nearly 11 acres of land within the institute’s premises.
Funding for the AI centre is planned to be shared among multiple partners: ₹24 crore from the Government of India, ₹24 crore from the Bihar government, and ₹12 crore from industry collaborators. These contributions reflect a cooperative model between public institutions and private sector stakeholders aimed at promoting research, innovation, and industry engagement.
The proposed Mega AI Centre of Excellence will focus on developing cutting-edge infrastructure and support systems for artificial intelligence research. It will enable students, researchers, and industry partners to work with advanced technology, fostering collaboration in various fields such as machine learning, data science, and automation. Experts say the centre could help build a stronger AI ecosystem in the region and create new opportunities for academic and commercial applications.
Officials also believe that establishing the AI centre at IIT Patna will contribute to broader economic and educational growth in Bihar. By enhancing access to high-end research facilities and encouraging innovation, the project is expected to attract talent and investments, positioning the state as a driver of technological advancement in eastern India.
This initiative follows other recent developments aimed at boosting tech infrastructure in Bihar, including the opening of IT parks and collaborations with technology companies exploring opportunities in the region. As the state government continues to prioritize technology-driven growth, projects like the Mega AI Centre are seen as significant steps toward building a robust digital and innovation ecosystem.
